After graduating from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Derek Harris worked for a year in Nashville before finding his way to Columbus for a job with a finance company offering home equity products at the time. From there, Derek entered into the mortgage loan business in 1998. In 2011, he made the move to Priority Mortgage and has been a key member to our team ever since.
In addition to being licensed in Ohio, Derek frequently makes trips to his family vacation home in Florida, where he is also licensed and growing his business.

What is your favorite part about working at PMC?
Helping people is the best part of my job.
Whether it’s helping someone purchase their first home or helping someone refinance their current mortgage so they can pay off other debt to put themselves in a better financial situation, I really enjoy advising my clients and helping them find the product that best fits their financial needs.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy going on hikes to Hocking Hills with my wife, spending time at the beach with my two children, playing golf, playing with our 2 dogs (Charlie Murphy and Lucy Lou) or getting my hands dirty with some DIY projects around the house.
What is your personal motto or mantra?
Under promise, over deliver.
Tell us a little bit about your team and working with Mike Roman.
Mike has been a great asset for our team since we joined forces early in 2021. His attention to detail and thirst for more knowledge was evident and teaming up seemed a logical fit. He does a fantastic job with keeping applications moving throughout the loan process and assisting me with some of the communication with borrowers and real estate agents. His help has allowed me to spend more time advising our clients of their best options early in the loan process.
What are you currently listening to and/or reading?
Music has always been a big part of my life. People are often surprised to hear that I love heavy metal music, but I truly enjoy all types of music. I used to work in a music store selling CDs and cassette tapes as a teenager and still enjoy going to concerts. My kids often remind me that listening to Pandora with ads isn’t really the coolest way to listen to new music these days!
I’m currently reading Gettin’ (un)Busy, which is giving me more to think about in terms of keeping a better work-home life balance. While we all want to be great at our jobs, we also need to be great at home for the people we love.
Do you have a favorite Priority Mortgage memory?
Back in the pre-COVID days, I always enjoyed when the team would bring their dogs into work. When you’re in the mode of working and constantly looking at your phone or computer, being greeted by a cute little dog wandering around the office was a welcomed break.
What are three words you would use to describe Priority Mortgage?
Efficient – as a smaller company, loans move more efficiently through the loan process.
Personal – advice and options given to our clients.
Competitive – rates and programs.
