Effective Communication with Bilingual Clients in Real Estate

The mortgage process can be confusing and stressful, with terminology that most people struggle to understand. For those who are non-native English speakers, it may be even more difficult. This is why mortgage loan originators and staff members who speak more than one language are valuable resources to the team and customer.

Speaking in a client’s native language not only improves communication but also improves their understanding of the options when making important financial decisions. If you do not speak a customer’s native dialect, you can still prepare for multilingual clients by learning key phrases to make them feel comfortable throughout the process.

Here are a few ways you can improve your communication with clients who speak other languages:

  • Research the culture of your clients to better understand mannerisms and traditions.
  • Create a list of mortgage and real estate jargon in other languages. Fannie Mae has great list of resources to get you started.
  • Download apps and online translators to your phone to help you translate words and phrases. Access Google Translate online or download the Google Translate or iTranslate Voice app.
  • Tap into your network to identify multilingual mortgage loan originators, Realtors and other real estate professionals who can assist when the opportunity arises.

At Priority Mortgage, our goal is to make the loan process as clear, simple and worry-free as possible for all borrowers. We have bilingual team members who speak various languages, including Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin).
